I'm sure you have already done these things, but it always helps me when I turn on the formatting symbols and zoom in; things show up that I was not aware of. Also by rolling over the left side until the arrow appears and clicking to show the properties this way. Also be sure to save the normal page setup and when you have a page that doesn't have the weird formatting; save it as a .dot and then create a direct shortcut to that template somewhere on the desktop.
