I have seen similar behavior when the text contains "special" characters, that your viewing text does not contain. You might try changing the viewing font.

I have also seen similar behavior when the text contains "hidden" items, such as links that the sender does not want you to see. If the emails are from trusted senders, this is probably not the issue.
