Custom slide numbers in the slide sorter

Hi,

Is there a way to have custom slide numbers in slide sorter. At the moment it goes from 1 upwards. I would like to have numbers like 3.1, 3.2 and so on to reflect chapter and figure numbers in my thesis. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
