yeah, definitely. that's why I want to avoid it, aside from the fact that it's messy, time consuming, and isn't helpful for a template. actually at this point we probably won't be regenerating the TOC anymore (just page numbers at this point), but if I am asked to do it manually for whatever reason I suppose I'd remove the field codes first (although I noticed that removing those field codes seemed more involved than removing, for instance, endnote fields, but another topic for another day!).
