How is the overall % complete of the total project calculated?

Is it calculated by taking % AND duration of each activity ? but how about activities on the critical path vs activities not on the critical path? or for instance few activities occuring at the same time vs few activities occurring in sequence. in these two cases does the calculation differ? in other words is it calculated by taking into account of the impact of each activity to the overall schedule AND its % AND duration, or just its % and duration, without considering its place on the schedule?
