Default
Word's maximum supported file size is 512Mb. Word will save a file larger than this, but it won't be able to open it later. How large is your file?

Have you tried repairing Word (Word Options|resources|Diagnose)? Also, are you sure you don't have a faulty RAM module? There are utiltities available that will test your RAM, etc.
