You can insert a link in a Word document to a pdf file that opens the file in a pdf reader, a separate program.

You can convert your pdf to a series of images (jpg) that can be inserted in a Word file. There may be ways to make those images collapse or show. If this is something you want to explore I believe Greg Maxey's site may have some code that would help.
