Hi Verdande,

I believe you're referring to what Word calls a Table of Contents, not an Index. Be that as it may, anything that appears there does so because it's paragraph is formatted in one of the Styles you're using for the Table of Contents. You say:

Word's Heading Styles and Normal Style are quite different. Anything with a Heading Style attached is liable to appear in the Table of Contents, even if the formatting of that paragraph has been chenged to look like the 'Normal' Style.
