Hi bushed,

If you resume work on a recovered document, without first saving it, you're just asking for trouble. If Word crashes or is shut down by Windows, you may end up with the same recoverd file being presented to you nest time you start. The thing is, though, there may also be other recoverd versions of the same file. Without opening each, you may not know which has the latest info.

At this stage, I'd say your unsaved work is toast. You may be able to find it, though, by looking in Word's left-over tmp files.
