Previously, I had a hyperlink leading to another slide on each picture, with a back button taking the user back to the previous slide. This could be done again, but is an undesireable way around the problem.

Can anyone advise me on how I can just open the pictures over the slide?

I hope this makes sense,

I think your hyperlinking is the way to go but I would make a few more slides. basically have your first slide with the 4 pictures. when the user clicks on one of the pictures it should take them to the chart but instead of just making a slide with the chart copy your slide with the 4 pictures minus the hyperlinks and then paste your chart over it to give the effect you want. then create a hyperlink on that chart that when clicked takes the user back to the 4 pictures slide.

This would consist of 5 slides.
Slide1 - 4 pictures with hyperlinks to charts
slide 2 - chart for picture 1 with the chart hyperlinking back to slide 1
slide 3 - chart for picture 2 "same"
slide 4 - chart for picture 3 "same"
slide 5 - chart for picture 4 "same"
