Hi Frustrated,

Pretty well any word-processing app that can read a docx file can read a doc file. The converse isn't necessarily true, though. Word 2003 & earlier, for example, need to have a converter installed before they can read docx files.

I can imagine staff in some agencies taking the attitude that if they can't read your CV, that's your problem - not theirs...

Personally, If I wanted to ensure my CV was readable no matter what word-processing software the recipient uses, I'd send it as a PDF; which also means the layout remains as intended. Almost everyone has a PDF reader.
