If you press Enter twice, the errant number will disappear.

A better way to manage this is to use a paragraph Style with numbering, perhaps defined so that presseing Enter creates an un-numbered paragraph (based on a different paragraph Style) and to use different Styles for numbered and un-numbered paragraphs.
