Well, at "hundreds of pages long", Word is going to require some time to do the pagination. If you switch to draft view and turn background pagination off, the files will likely load faster. Increasing the amount of RAM may help too (it certainly won't do any harm), but the fact your PC only has 2GB suggests it pre-dates both Word 2007 and Windows 7 and may already be pushing the CPU a bit.
