Default Hidden style applied over already-hidden text.

I am using templates and styles to organize a large number of documents to be easily switched from one standard to another. In every document, there are two title lines that each have their own styles (title 1 and title 2). I also have two different character styles (A and B) that are applied to either of two different ways of representing section numbers. Those numbers are within the text of titles 1 and 2.

All templates have either style A or style B set with font hidden, so that only one way of representing the section number is in the document.

However, I also need to set some of the templates to hide the Title 1 and/or Title 2 styles, as those headings are not used in those templates. But when I try to do this, the fact that there is already hidden text in that line seems to mess everything up-- the hidden text of A or B reappears and also pulls the text from the following line to its line, thus messing up the rest of my numbered document.

Does anyone know what my problem could be?
