Per your first question; you can open the shared calendar in a new window. Select the shared calender then View > open in a New Window. This is going to open the calendar in a new window will full ribbon options.

When you select the Calendar tab, typing an entree in the search calendar, will only locate items for your user. A shared calendar does not index its items to your profile.
