Default [Word 97] Loosing Formatting When Changing Styles

I have a number of styles.

The different number of paragraph styles just set the font, size, and style = regular.
The difference between the paragraph style may also include the first line indent.
I also have (what I call styles - created as paragraph styles) which represent a few words with special formatting. For example those styles allow me to select several words and have them appear with different font characteristics. Example: "Now is the time" (an indexed font).

It may be my error but sometimes I forget to use the "few words" style and manually select the words and change the font (e.g. the indexed font).

-----------

PROBLEM
------------
If I change the paragraph style (e.g. with the first line indent) to another first line indent style, sometimes, but not always, I loose the "few words" styles that resides in the paragraph indent style. That then caused me to have to redo everything within that paragraph.

Is there a better way to do this?
