You can display document gridlines in Word. Use the "Gridlines" option on the View tab. See the attached screen shot.
You can customize the grid via Page Layout tab > Arrange group > Align > Grid Settings.
That said, you won't have access to the same type of placement options as the ones that are found in page layout programs.
