So far there have been no other replies. When I looked at the Microsoft Support page, I also saw an option to "repair". What do you think of that? I tried the same operations on my son's computer, and it worked perfectly. This problem started with an issue with the insert text box command on the quick start menu. I had to remove it because it no longer worked. That had always been my way to add a new text box.
