The TAB indicators are showing up when he doesn't expect them. He declared the Pilcrow is not active, but he still sees the TAB indicators.
He should be able to delete them as instructed. Not going through
that with him.

This comment was odd and suggest a different experience between different installs, perhaps different versions. Options are unique between some users. Some settings get changed and forgotten, especially on a shared family machine.
You know we are often at the disadvantage of not only language, but jargon and experience in trying to help OPs on any forum.
