I can only guess that it's not included in your version. I'm on Office 365 and it's an option there. Judging from this Support page for Word including your version, what they do offer is that when you click on the Word count in the status bar, the popup will give you characters and other stats.

That part works for me too, though I could add character count (including spaces.)
