In a text box, you should be able to click and see the insertion point blinking. If this proves difficult, maybe the text box is displayed "Behind Text" or something like that.
Drawn objects, such as shapes, can also contain text. You should be able to click the box and then start typing; Word will add the text you type.
To change the vertical alignment of text in the box, use the Align Text option on the Shape Format ribbon.
