Default Can I no longer install Office 2016 desktop from a DVD?

I have an old PC that I did a factory reset on and then installed Office 2016 desktop from the DVD. The installation went normally, or so I thought. I attempt to open Word and I get the normal First things first dialog box seen below.

However regardless of which radio button I tick or even if I close the box, the screen goes blank and Word disappears. This occurs if I attempt to open Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

I installed a legitimate copy of Office 2016 and I have a legitimate install key.

Has it simply become obsolete and I can no longer install Office 2016 desktop?
