I stand to be corrected on this but the only other thing I can think of is an incompatibility between a document created on a laptop using Windows based MS Word and the Word version for iPad OS.

As a test have you tried accessing the document on another Windows computer/laptop using MS Word to see if the problem appears on that as well? If it does not happen there then it points to the iPad version of Word being unable to handle the document properly.
