Default How to remove MS 365 that was not activated?

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, so if I need to look elsewhere I'd appreciate a note back.

Recently had to replace my laptop because of a hard drive crash. Decided to buy a subscription to MS 365, but never activated it. In spite of that, it appears at least some of it was "installed". For example, I have a license to Office 2016, which I was able to download from MS, but the start screen for applications like Excel say "MS 365". OneDrive is also installed and active.

I've been able to stop some of MS 365 by logging off my MS online account, which now shows Excel 2016 starting. Also stopped OneDrive from automatically starting, which means it doesn't sync.

Unfortunately, I don't understand enough about MS 365 to know what guidance to take. Some recommends just removing the application. I'm willing to do that, but I want some confidence that other things (e.g. Office 2016) will continue to work. I'm also not sure if anything cautions need to be taken to remove OneDrive. The fact that files paths are C/user/me/OneDrive/ makes me wonder if I need to move files before removing OneDrive.

The final complication is that MS doesn't show the MS 365 subscription in my MS account. I've been told that's because I didn't activate the subscription. Eventually, I'd like to cancel the subscription, but not sure if I have to activate it first, or whether MS can cancel it without activation.

Not looking to get the money back; I didn't do enough homework when I bought the subscription. Just prefer that it not be part of the new laptop.

Thanks
