The original post is over a year old! And hyperlinking wouldn't address Jacob's issue.

However, you could use change-tracking (aka Track Changes). Do note that this applies to the whole document, though, not just a selected portion. You can turn it on/off at will, though, and previously-tracked changes are preserved while it's switched off (unless you deliberately/carelessly delete the tracked changes).
