I note your disagreement Charles and am happy to concede because of the nested field issue. I prefer to use Shift-F9 because I rarely need to nest fields and there are less keystrokes to modify the code and refresh the field since it only takes F9 to update and reveal the result.

Marcia, it sounds like you have this fixed now but the reason that Shift-F9 didn't show the TOC field code is that you only selected a line within the TOC and not the entire TOC before using that code. I always select the entire TOC before using Shift-F9. This is easy to do by dragging a selection from outside the TOC (either above or below) into the TOC. When your selection starts outside of the TOC, the entire TOC gets selected as you drag into it.
