If the sort has a maximum character limitation then perhaps you need to split it across multiple cells.

If it was me doing it, I would save the file as a text file and import that into Excel and tell the import to split lines at a fixed character position (eg 60). Then sort on multiple columns and paste it back into Word as Text Only.
