I am using O365 and would number the Lines from the Layout Ribbon. There is an Option under the group "Page Setup" called Line Numbers.
Reviewing my copy of the V6 Word manual, File, Page Setup, Select the Layout Tab and choose the Line Numbers button. Line Numbers will be added to the current Section.

The first sample I produced uses the numbers in a text box. The second uses the line numbering feature. These produce different products.


Yes the lines are simply lines inserted in the header.

For more on this, I would recommend posting a separate question. Although very much related, you are NOT using Word 97 and that can make a big difference.
