It is likely that you have Style+ formatting where a Style was used then some form of Direct Formatting was applied to that Style creating a NEW STYLE.
Change the View Options of the Styles Pane to show ALL Styles. That way you can see all the Styles in the Current Style Set for the document.
Also, you can remove any Direct Formatting from Selected Text by pressing CTRL+SPACE
