You change the table style by putting your cursor inside the table and then going to Table Tools > Design tab. You will see the table styles as big buttons and you change the current table from "Table Grid" to anything other than "Table Normal". Once you've done that, you can change the attributes of the table directly or modify your chosen table style. If you choose to modify the table style, DON'T apply any font settings.
