Another post had a link to Mastering the Spelling Checker. There it told me about a menu option I was unaware of. I went and checked and the body of the document uses American English, but Comment text used British English. I changed it for the body of the document because it had mixed language usage.
Now all I need to do is figure out how to change it for all comments in the document since I can select only one comment at a time. I have told it to set it to default, to no avail. I even opened the template, made the change there, and....it did not stick still back to BE.
I finished reading Guessed's post. The Language selection for the Comment Text in the style sheet was none. I set it to AE. While it did not change the current comments, all new ones are correct.
How they got different settings is unknown, but the Spelling Checker site explained how it could be possible.
