I would paste the excel content into Word in a different location - to firstly convert the content into a Word table format.
Then I would use format painter to paste the font formatting from your empty table into the fresh table content.
Finally, I would copy the fresh table content (excluding the end of table marker) and paste it into the original table. If the final copy includes the end of table marker then you are likely to end up with a nested table. The easy way to avoid this is to add an extra row on the end of the table you are copying and exclude that from the copy.
