Most shapes are set to respond to the Theme applied to the document. If you go to the Design tab and choose a theme and Variant you should be able to change default properties of existing and new shapes on the page. Thanks - that looks reasonable but it is something I've never messed with. I picked a theme at random [the leftmost one] and a Variant similarly [again, the leftmost one]. I don't see, exactly, from there how to tweak things like shape-fill and line width. When I go to "shape styles" on the home tab I still can't change Fill t "no fill" [although i was able to change the default line width.
