It's time for you to learn about Styles in Word and how to use them. Yes, you can format some text to look like it's been formatted in a heading Style, but that doesn't make it so. Conversely, you can reformat some text in a paragraph to which a heading Style has been applied so that it looks like it isn't in that Style. Neither should occur.
To make life easier, you can add a 'Style' box to the QAT. This shows the Style of the current selection and allows you to choose a different one just by typing the first few characters of its name.
