Andrew, take a look at my sample. (Use link or attachment above.) I am pretty sure that what Marcia is after is to have auto-numbered headings in the document and to have those same headings appear as bulleted items in the TOC without the numbering. It is not simple, but it can be done. The sample is a demonstration.

You can add bullets to the TOC styles, yes. However if the TOC is based on those heading styles, it will also include the numbers. You can, though, use StyleRef fields based on those same styles incorporated in TC fields and base the TOC on the TC fields rather than the styles. The StyleRef does not pull in the numbering.
