I would recommend you export the Inkscape graphic as a PNG. It is not a vector format but I find this is the most robust format for most graphics you would produce in Inkscape. And PNGs support transparency so you have that flexibility as well.

In my experience, Word doesn't do well with SVG formats but I haven't had problems with PNGs
