What Paul has said is true so long as you are using legacy form fields in documents that are protected for filling in forms. The "calculate on exit option" is slightly misnamed. It should read "Use this in other places in the document upon exit."
If you do not want that (very restrictive) form of restriction, use mapped content controls.
