Do you have any Word Addins that might be interfering with the process (you previously mentioned Acrobat, the Pro version of which typically runs as a Word Addin)? You can start Word without any addins/macros via 'winword.exe /a' from Start|Run. No addin's

Does it work if you run Word in its 'safe' mode (eg 'Winword.exe /safe' from Start|Run)? Will try and post back.

Re-registering Word & Outlook in Windows might also help resolve the problem:
winword /regserver
outlook /regserver
