Post Using Slide Master Layout to apply footers/backgrounds to slides added without affecting text format

I have looked for the answer and my search has thus far been in vain. I frequently use powerpoint to create PDF presentations. I have outside slides that i have to add to the beginning of the ppt presentations and those slide typically come with bunch of various formats and changes often. What i need to do is 1.redo the background formatting or 2.apply or reapply the footer/design at the bottom of the page with the dynamic page number. I see you can do this via applying the layout from the Slide Master. The issue i run into there is that it changes the formatting of text in the slide you apply the layout to even if you are applying just a slide without text boxes and just background updates. Is there a way to adjust just the background without altering any text formatting or image sizing?
