Not sure if this is exactly what you want. Hopefully the command I'm going to tell you about was available in Outlook 2010:

From the main Outlook user interface...

1. Click "File"
2. Click "Options"
3. Click "Customize Ribbon"
4. In the "Choose commands from" drop down list, choose "All Commands"
5. Scroll down the list until you arrive at "Find Contact"
6. "Add" it to the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT)

7. Click "OK"

This will add a search box to the QAT. Click in it, and type the name (or part of the name, or the first few characters of the email address) of the person you want to look up.
