I'm using current versions of Word and I can add more than 5 columns to a section layout. I don't recall if Word 2002 even exists in Windows (I thought it jumped from 2000 to 2003), nor whether it is limited to 5 columns maximum.

I suspect it is more likely that the column count is limited by the size of the spaces between columns. You should be able to reduce those column gaps in the same column settings dialog.
