Sounds like you are tracking revisions and the fields are updating. If so, turn off revision tracking before updating all the fields.

However, your statement about expecting 4 different numbers and getting 3.18 four times could be a cross-reference issue. If you insert a figure in front of the 3.18 do you then get four 3.19s instead?
