Default Create a run-in on the left or right side of a page with word wrap

I heard in a writing podcast that I can use textboxes in Word to create run-ins, with text wrapping around them. I have tried this several items, changing the layout to text wrapping but
a) I cannot get it to be where I want it. It shows up as a big box in the middle of the page between text and
b) attempting to move the points of the box only gives me some lines on the page, while the text, which I can't override, stays in the middle of the page. This isn't working as I expected it to. I must be doing something fundamentally wrong.

My web search for instructions on this turned up nothing relevant. How does one do this? It must be possible, I see it in books and magazines all the time. Thanks.
