The numbering you get through AutoFormat as you type is prone to becoming a real mess. Many experienced Word users turn this option off.

Thanks a lot for the link. I'll need some more time to actually set this up, but it sounds quite good. Do you know anything about how that works with Office updates? So I'm using Office 365, so whenever there's a new version I have it and it would be very annoying if I'd have to set it up anew every time.
