The first thing you need to do is display the non-printing characters, which is Ctrl+Shift+8, or click on the paragraph mark in the Home tab, or whatever 2010 has. This allows you to see if there is a return at the end of each line in the docx. If there is one there, but not in the doc, the docx files may have come from text files, which put a break at the end of the line.

Otherwise, check every aspect of your paragraph formatting in the paragraph style in both cases.
