Great idea, thanks! It sounds like there is no overt technique incorporated into MS Word to achieve this. I have implemented what you suggested. The table itself extends to the end of the page, and so there is no text after the table on this page, to which to append a footnote. So I went to the last element of the table, and inserted a footnote there. MS Word created the call number as well as a place in the footnote section down below for pasting the footnote.

The problem I am facing is, when I paste the footnote text, it places the entire footnote on the next page and pulls the final row of the table along with it. There is room there for the final row of the table to remain in its original place and for the first two lines of the footnote to be on that very page down below. But instead, MS Word pulls the entire last row of the table along with the entire footnote onto the following page. How to prevent this from happening?
