I'm having trouble playing back videos in powerpoint, i've got audio but no video.

I'm running windows 7, service pack 1, 64bit, Office 365 Personal which was last updated 2018, according to the notes. I've tried the 'platform update' download but received the installation message that my pc already had this update.

Judging by the above links, I might need some kind of .mp4 codec. I installed a codec finding software which recommended codec updates and I tried a few which didn't work. I've also been through the options and changed some of the settings which didn't work either. The video image is there in the slide - it just doesn't start playing when I click play - only the audio starts.
