All Word documents use Styles - it's unavoidable. It's whether they've been used properly that's the issue. One way of knowing whether Styles have been used appropriately is to select a range then press Ctrl-Shift. That will remove any direct formatting applied to the text. Similarly, right-clicking on a paragraph break and choosing Styles>Apply Styles>Reapply will soon show whether the paragraph format is consistent with the underlying Style definition for that paragraph.
