Default Bullet points isn't placed at marker; can I change the formatting here?

Hi.

I am having trouble using bullet points. In fact, I feel like this aspect of MS Word has always been a thorn in my side.

Adding bullet points seemlingy always comes with formatting. Currently, I have 3 lines of text, and I want to start a bullet point list from here. It really doesn't matter WHERE my marker is; it could be on the 4th (empty) line where I want it to start, or after the 3rd, or 2nd - what happens is that a bullet point is place in front of the FIRST line of text, and of course moves all the text towards the right. I can even right clock on the empty line and try adding bullet points like that, but same thing happens. Bullet points from the beginning of the document, or not at all - seems to be my only options.

My need is simple, and thus also my question:
I'd like a bullet point placed where I have the marker. Is this possible?

(And I am pulling my hair out in frustration over the fact that this isn't the default setting, or at least never has been for me in Word for as long as can remember and regardless of the computer I am working on)
