Default Outlook deletes my e-mails

I use an Earthlink account. Yes, I don't like it, but it's the e-mail I've used since the 90s, it's linked up and it's the ones my friends know.

My e-mail filled up - some photos, too much unwanted solicitations, and I hadn't cleaned it out in a while, so I figured I'd upload it to outlook to empty it out.

I like that the new outlook system auto connects, that part was easier.

It didn't automatically delete, so I figured, OK, I'll delete myself, but after the e-mails uploaded to outlook, I'd delete them in Earthlink to create space and outlook would delete them too. WTF?

Who sets that up as a default and why? I'm sure I can't get my e-mails back, but I thought they were safely on my PC, now they're gone. I have no idea what I might have deleted.

Seriously messed up system. How do I undo this? And is there any way to get my e-mails back. I never deleted them from outlook, outlook it seems auto-deleted them. Didn't even put them in a delete folder. They're just gone.
